Ellen’s Meme
Ellen’s Meme
There is a lot of controversy surrounding the Ellen DeGeneres/Usain Bolt meme. Many people are saying it’s racist and racially insensitive; while others are saying it was a harmless meme, and she was just kidding. I’m indifferent to the subject because memes are a form of art, and art is always up for interpretation. Before anyone makes a conclusion on this meme, we have to look at the creator of the meme (Ellen) and “victims” black people. Unfortunately, black people are politically one of the weakest “minority” groups on earth. That’s because many of us are too busy trying to get the rest of the world to try to accept us through our arts or sports. While the rest of us don’t practice group economics and these decision have been haunting us for decades. The Jewish community and the LGBT community, for example, have historically dealt with racism or discrimination by the dominant society. As a result, both groups pooled their money and started educating themselves, accumulating wealth and getting involved in politics. Now, both groups are powerful, and they push buttons; if you disrespect either group, you need to give a sincere apology, or you’re done.
It’s different in the black community, many of us are too busy showing compassion towards our fellow man, hoping that in return, they’ll have compassion towards our pain and plight. That’s why whenever Ellen, Justin Beiber or whoever makes their racist jokes or comment, you’ll immediately have a bunch of black folks running to defend themselves, with their capes flapping in the background. This is a weak move in the sight of your enemies because instead of seeking justice for wrong-doings, you’re more concerned about teaching the world compassion and forgiveness. No buttons are pressed, no repercussions are felt, and nobody gets the Mel Gibson or Isaiah Washington treatment. The public figure will just hire a coon pastor to stand beside him, then will make a half –ass apology, then all is well. They can go back to cooking, making bad music or corny jokes. You don’t ask for power, you take it; you don’t ask for respect; you demand it. I don’t know anything about Ellen DeGeneres to be judging her, all I see is that she’s corny and can’t dance. This could have just been one of her corny memes that she always does, or it could be her sexualizing black men, or she could have been trying to take away from Mr. Bolt’s recent achievement. Who knows what’s in her heart; all I know is that it’s not a good timing. People are putting in work against racial injustice worldwide, and they don’t know if that meme was a white supremacist meme, but you’re getting your clap back anyway. Congratulations to Usain Bolt on all his medals and Ellen, get off that brother’s back, you doofus!
