Straight Outta Compton: Review
4.5/out 5 stars
This is my review of F.Gary Gray’s latest film “Straight Outta Compton”. I’m gonna be very careful how I word this review because I want everyone to see it. For those who don’t know (or those too young to remember), N.W.A was a pioneering group in hip-hop, and they’re responsible for spawning other successful Hip-Hop acts such as Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, The Game and Kendrick Lamar, just to name a few. During their rise to prominence (early to mid-nineties), race relation in America was going through high tension.
The film chronicles the lives of N.W.A members Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr.Dre, Mc Ren and Dj Yella, their rise to fame and their downfall and redemption. It also highlights hip-hop, when it still was political, and depicts how the groups fought against the FBI, the police, and the government. The film also has a totally unknown cast which include O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Ice Cubes’ son). The movie wasn’t a “funky fingers production” like a lot of black films nowadays. The acting was stellar, and it was well directed and shot. So, congratulations to Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, and also F. Gary Gray; you brothers nailed it! I highly recommend everyone to watch this, even if you’re not a fan of Hip-hop and just want to watch a good movie. Straight Outta Compton had a very successful opening weekend, and I expect Hollywood to start rolling out the hip-hop biopics now. I hope the idiots that made the Lifetime Aaliyah biopics are taking note on this, and how it’s done.
